SMART Financial Goals for 2024

It's time for a design biz that makes you

Wondering what kind of a SMART financial goal I’ve set for 2024? I’ll show you mine if you show me yours. 😉

What’s *my* 2024 goal? To make $60,000 directly from course sales from the two courses I built last year: “Nail Your Niche” (all about nailing our unique brand messages) and “From Client Lead to Project Launch” (all about setting clear client expectations from when they meet you to when they sign your design agreement).

It’s a S.M.A.R.T. goal because it’s Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Realistic. and Time-Bound.

My goal as written above is already pretty specific, measurable, and time-bound. Now let’s add a little more detail to make sure it’s actually achievable and realistic! A S.M.A.R.T. goal should spell out both WHAT you’re trying to achieve, and give you an idea of HOW you’re going to achieve it. The details are really in the math.

Step One: The Math

I have to figure out how many students I need (in your case, that would be clients) so I can set (and track!!) my measurable goals. I want to keep the live courses small and intimate, so that affects how often I’ll host the class, and how I need to price them to give personalized attention to each client.

“Nail Your Niche” costs $300.

If I have 6 students in each class, and if I host it 4 times in a year, that’s $7200.

“Lead To Launch” costs $3000.

If I have 6 students in each class, and if I host it 3 times a year, that’s $54,000.

Goal = Achieved!

Breaking our goals down into digestible bites makes them accomplishable! Now that I know what I’m trying to accomplish, and what success would look like, I can choose my marketing efforts with these specific goals in mind That’s how this stuff works. Set a goal, track your success, set a new goal, repeat.

Have you figured out how many clients you have the capacity to help in 2024, and reviewed how you need to price your projects (ie, what size projects you need to take on) to meet your financial goals? (If that feels overwhelming, that might be a great thing to work on with a business coach.)

Step Two: The Marketing

Now that we have “something to sell” (for me it’s my classes, for you it’s your design work) the next step is simple: TELL PEOPLE!

(( Simple – ha!! 😂 Remember, just because something is “simple” doesn’t make it easy, and like many of you, I often FAIL at posting content consistently. ))

👉 But that’s literally what it takes, folks.

#1: Figure out what you sell. For example, full-service interior design for busy professionals.

#2: Find a way to package it that is easy for folks to understand. This is where clever service names come into play, like “The Works: all the construction docs and professional project management you need to make your mid-century kitchen remodel a stress-free breeze.”

#3: Tell people about it! Pick your platform, and post prolifically! That might be on Instagram, in a networking group, or through an email list.

I’ve spent an entire year developing these courses so I can help interior designers create professional, profitable design businesses. Now I have to be brave and let people know how to access them.

What have YOU built that people should know about? What brave steps do you need to take, and where do you need to take them?

Step Three: The Outsourcing

The GREAT thing about setting SMART financial goals (goals that are tied to the products or services you sell and the capacity you have to sell them) is that not only can you can finally develop an intentional marketing plan, you could even hire someone to help with your marketing! Knowing WHAT you’re trying to achieve and what you need to DO to meet those goals is precisely what’s needed if you’re going to spend your marketing time – or money – effectively. 💪

What SMART goals have you set for 2024, and what do YOU need to be brave about this year?

Hi! I’m Rebecca!

When I closed my design biz to move to Paris I discovered how hard it was for me to refer my clients to other designers because I couldn't tell what the designer did, who they did it for, or what they delivered!

Now I'm on a mission to help designers nail their niche and set clear client expectations.

It's all about being able to clearly communicate what you do, who you do it for, what they should expect, and what they'll get, and it's the #1 key to getting hired by clients you love to work on projects you're proud of!
