Interior Design Business Coaching & Team Training FAQs
Let's create the conditions for your success.
Whether you're building your first real business systems, leading an established design firm, or responsible for a client-facing team, the goal is the same:
Create the conditions that help talented people do great work, help clients make confident decisions, and help the business become more profitable without everyone running on adrenaline.
Here are answers to the questions designers, firm owners, and company leaders most often ask about working with me.
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Is This Coaching or Training Right for Me?
I work primarily with residential interior designers, small design firms, design-build companies, and builders with in-house design teams.
Some of my clients are solo designers trying to turn talent and determination into a sustainable business. Others are established owners who need their systems, employees, and client experience to work as well without them in every conversation.
What they tend to have in common is that they care deeply about their clients, take their work seriously, and want more than generic templates or advice like “post more,” “set a boundary,” or “raise your prices.”
They want to understand why something is not working, create a smart solution, and build a business that can reliably deliver what it promises.
No.
Those can all be excellent business models, but they are not the only paths to profitability.
Seriously Happy Homes was a flat-fee, design-only residential firm serving primarily mid-market homeowners. We did not procure furniture, earn product markups, or rely on enormous luxury projects.
By the time I sold the company, we were a team of five generating approximately $425,000 in annual design-only revenue. Our established design fees generally ranged from $5,000 to $20,000, and our conversion rate typically ranged from 65 to 80 percent.
The model worked because we had clear services, strong price signals, effective consultations, thoughtful onboarding, and a client-friendly process that made it possible for our designers to deliver excellent work profitably.
You do not have to become a luxury designer to run a strong business. You do need a business model that supports the clients you serve and the promises you make.
Yes, selectively.
Private coaching can be extremely valuable for a newer designer who has a clear sense of what they want to build, is prepared to invest in high-level help, and is willing to implement what we develop together.
Newer designers often need more than a template because they have not yet accumulated enough experience to know which systems, services, policies, and marketing choices fit the business they are trying to create.
Nail Your Niche may also be a fit once you are actively marketing your services. That means you are doing things like building a professional website, using a business Instagram account, networking with contractors, collecting email addresses, attending home shows, or otherwise trying to attract actual paying clients.
You do not need to have everything figured out. You do need a real goal, curiosity, and the willingness to make decisions.
Absolutely.
Established owners often seek help because the business has outgrown the informal systems that worked when everything lived inside the founder’s head.
You may be preparing to hire your first employee, training a growing design team, or realizing that your staff members do not yet communicate your value, process, or expectations as consistently as you do.
We can strengthen the client process before you hire, help you determine what kind of employee you actually need, and create the tools and training that allow your team to represent the brand confidently.
The goal is not to turn employees into tiny replicas of the founder. It is to give them enough clarity, support, and decision-making skill to do excellent work without needing the owner to rescue every difficult conversation.
Yes, when the language, schedule, and business context make sense.
Most of my clients are U.S.-based residential interior designers, so many of my examples, pricing conversations, and business references come from that market. I am based in France and work virtually, which makes international coaching and training completely possible.
The core principles of clearer positioning, thoughtful onboarding, client trust, confident decision guidance, and sustainable systems travel quite well. 🙂
What Can You Help Me Improve?
Because they are not three unrelated business problems. They are three stages of one client relationship.
Your marketing helps the right client recognize that you understand what they need.
Your onboarding helps them understand what they are hiring you to do, how your process works, what decisions they will need to make, and what you need from them to deliver excellent work.
The DECIDE Method helps you guide those clients through unfamiliar, expensive, emotionally loaded choices without letting overwhelm, second-guessing, or competing priorities derail the project.
Nail Your Niche and Lead to Launch create the conditions that make DECIDE work. You can begin wherever the greatest friction exists, but all three systems ultimately support the same outcome:
Clients who understand your value, trust your process, and make confident decisions inside it.
No. A useful niche does not have to trap you inside one aesthetic, room type, or tiny demographic until you become known exclusively as the blue-kitchen lady.
Your niche may be shaped by:
- The kind of client problem you solve
- The way you approach the design process
- The homes, locations, or project sizes you prefer
- The priorities or values you bring to the work
- The kind of client experience you are especially good at creating
- A distinctive lens you have been afraid to express clearly
Nail Your Niche helps you identify the meaningful differences that already exist in your business and communicate them so the right clients can recognize themselves.
The goal is not to limit your creativity. It is to stop making potential clients work so hard to understand why you are the right designer for them.
Probably.
A referral creates an introduction. It does not automatically explain your services, process, price point, point of view, or why the person referring you thought you would be a good fit.
Clear marketing helps a referred prospect understand what you do before the first conversation. It also helps contractors and former clients refer you more accurately because they finally have useful language for describing your value.
Without that clarity, even a warm referral can arrive expecting the wrong service, budget, timeline, or level of involvement.
Good marketing does not replace referrals. It helps referrals work better.
Yes, but we will not solve those problems by plucking a larger number out of the air or announcing that you are no longer available to any humans.
Pricing makes sense only in context. Clients need to understand what they are buying, what the service helps them accomplish, what is included, what is not included, and what level of project investment the service supports.
Boundaries work the same way. The strongest boundaries are usually communicated through your marketing, intake form, consultation, service descriptions, proposal, agreement, welcome materials, and everyday client process.
When those systems are clear, you do not have to summon a boundary from the depths of your nervous system every time something gets awkward.
We build the structure first so your pricing and policies feel credible, useful, and protective of both you and the client.
Yes.
Private coaching can include hands-on help with website copy, service descriptions, intake questions, client documents, newsletters, referral materials, sales language, and other places where your value or process needs to be explained clearly.
Sometimes we develop and edit the language together. In other situations, I write or substantially rewrite the copy after we have made the necessary strategic decisions.
The strategy comes first because better adjectives cannot rescue a vague service, an undefined audience, or a process you do not yet understand yourself.
Once the business decisions are clear, we can make the copy sound specific, confident, useful, and unmistakably like you.
“After I took Lead To Launch I landed my first 5-figure design fee, and the client didn’t even flinch at the cost!” - Sue K., Interior Designer, Tennessee
How Can We Work Together?
That depends on where the greatest friction currently exists.
Start with Nail Your Niche if you have the design skills and are actively marketing, but your message still sounds generic or fails to attract enough good-fit clients.
Start with Lead to Launch if people are hiring you, but nearly every project becomes harder than it should. You may be overdelivering, repeatedly explaining yourself, scrambling for decisions, or holding the entire client experience together with determination and hope.
Learn the DECIDE Method if you or your team present design choices directly to clients and need a stronger, more consistent way to gather information, present recommendations, secure decisions, and keep projects moving.
Choose private coaching when you need fierce accountability, customized strategy, hands-on help, or support that crosses several parts of the business.

Nail Your Niche is my marketing and positioning intensive for residential interior designers who have the skills and are genuinely trying to attract paying clients, but still struggle to explain what makes their business different.
It is especially useful if you invested in a real website but ended up with pleasant-sounding generic copy, broad SEO, and phrases that could belong to approximately 47,000 other interior designers.
You will clarify what you do, whom you are best equipped to help, what your clients are really buying from you, and how your preferences, experience, process, and point of view distinguish your business.
It is also a good fit for designers who have a meaningful lens or set of values they want to bring forward but are nervous about being too specific.
You are not inventing a marketing persona. You are learning to communicate the value that is currently hiding in plain sight.
Lead to Launch is my client onboarding accelerator for talented designers who finally learned how to get hired and are now frustrated with nearly every project—and with themselves.
These designers are often exceptionally conscientious. They create detailed drawings, take care of their contractors, overdeliver for their clients, and catch every ball before it hits the ground.
The problem is that if they ever drop one, there is no process underneath them to catch it.
Lead to Launch helps you build the client-friendly structure that protects the project, the client, and your future self. We clarify your services, intake process, consultation, pricing signals, expectations, agreements, responsibilities, and onboarding tools.
You will understand not only what to put in place, but why it matters. That makes it much easier to explain your process confidently and follow it consistently.
The goal is not more bureaucracy. It is a sustainable business that can deliver what it promised without requiring you to care harder.
The DECIDE Method is my framework for helping design professionals guide clients through decisions with less overwhelm, delay, and second-guessing.
Clients are not making simple aesthetic choices. They are navigating unfamiliar territory, spending meaningful amounts of money, balancing competing priorities, negotiating with other decision-makers, and trying very hard not to get anything wrong.
DECIDE gives designers a practical process for:
- Gathering the right information efficiently
- Narrowing the problem before generating solutions
- Curating meaningful options
- Explaining recommendations clearly
- Helping clients make the decision
- Reinforcing their confidence afterward
The method can be used by solo designers, employees, salespeople, and anyone responsible for presenting design choices or helping clients approve them.
It is currently taught primarily through group and team training because the lessons become more useful when people practice, compare experiences, and develop a shared language together.
Private coaching is completely customized.
Some clients arrive with a specific agenda, bring their own homework, and use me as a strategic advisor and accountability partner. Others know what they want to build but need me to diagnose the gaps, create the roadmap, assign the work, and help them move through it.
Before our sessions, I review the materials you send so our time can be spent making decisions and solving problems rather than silently reading a document together on Zoom.
We can work on a single urgent problem or meet regularly while you build something substantial, such as your positioning, website, services, onboarding system, team structure, or client process.
A single session may be exactly what you need. Ambitious owners working actively toward a larger goal often meet once or twice a month and invest approximately $5,000 over the course of a year.
Results vary because implementation varies. What I bring is preparation, practical experience, honest feedback, strategic thinking, accountability, and a deep commitment to helping you build the business you actually want.
Private coaching begins with a single 60-minute session for $300. There is no minimum commitment.
Packages of 12 or more sessions receive a 15 percent discount and are designed for clients who want regular strategic support, accountability, or help completing a significant body of work.
Current course pricing and enrollment details are listed on the individual Nail Your Niche and Lead to Launch pages.
DECIDE Method team and corporate training is customized based on the number of participants, delivery format, level of customization, leadership involvement, and support required. A focused small-team engagement and a multi-month, company-wide training initiative are not the same product, so proposals vary substantially. Larger custom engagements may exceed $50,000.
That transparency is intentional. You deserve enough information to determine whether a conversation makes sense before investing everyone’s time.
DECIDE Method Training for Teams and Companies
Yes. Corporate and team training is based entirely on the DECIDE Method.
It is designed for established interior design firms, design-build companies, builders with in-house designers, and other organizations with client-facing design teams whose ability to gather information, present recommendations, and secure decisions directly affects project speed and profitability.
The strongest fit is usually a million-dollar to multi-million-dollar company with an involved leadership team and a genuine interest in developing its people, improving the client experience, and creating more consistency across the organization.
Training works best when leadership is engaged and the people selling, designing, and guiding the work can reinforce the same client process.
This is not a motivational talk about being more confident. It is a practical method your team can apply to actual projects and client conversations.
After learning and implementing the DECIDE Method, your designers should be better able to:
- Gather more useful client information in less time
- Present recommendations in a way that makes confident choices easier
- Secure important decisions on schedule
- Recognize why a decision has stalled
- Troubleshoot overwhelm, competing priorities, and disagreement
- Reset clients when milestone decisions fall behind
- Reduce second-guessing after decisions are made
- Protect project momentum without pressuring the client
When those skills improve, the benefits extend beyond individual client meetings.
The team spends less time researching ideas clients will never approve, repeating presentations, chasing decisions, managing avoidable anxiety, and pulling senior employees into conversations that should not require a rescue.
That can create smoother projects, more confident employees, happier clients, stronger referrals, less founder involvement, and better profitability.
No training can guarantee a specific revenue or retention number. But if your designers consistently gather better information, do less wasted work, get more decisions on time, and create a client experience people trust, your business should be more profitable and your reputation should be stronger than before.
No.
One of the most valuable things about the DECIDE Method is that it can improve profitability without changing your prices.
When employees gather better information, avoid unnecessary research, reduce revisions, secure decisions sooner, and need less help from senior staff, the company protects time and margin that are already being lost inside the current process.
You may eventually discover that a stronger process, more capable team, and better client experience allow you to command higher fees. That is a choice, not the only path to a return on the training.
The first goal is to make the work you already sell easier to deliver well and more profitable to provide.
I did not build my ideas in a hypothetical business.
I spent 17 years running Seriously Happy Homes, a flat-fee, design-only residential interior design firm. We served real homeowners with real budgets, real anxieties, real partners, real contractors, and plenty of moments when someone suddenly wondered whether the fireplace tile was ruining their life.
By the end, I led a team of five generating approximately $425,000 in annual design-only revenue without procurement or product markup. We maintained a strong conversion rate, earned more than 150 five-star reviews, generated repeat projects and contractor referrals, and built a business resilient enough to keep our team employed and invest in new tools and training during the beginning of COVID.
I also trained designers to conduct consultations, sell projects, communicate the brand, and guide clients with the same care and confidence clients had previously expected only from me. Two went on to build thriving firms of their own, and another entered architecture school after joining us without a design background.
The systems worked because they were not designed only to control clients or protect the company. They were designed to create conditions in which clients and designers could both succeed.
That is still the standard behind everything I teach.
